Tomoko Igawa
Tomoko Igawa is an associate professor who has led the Plant Cell Technology Laboratory at the Graduate School of Horticulture, Chiba University. She obtained her PhD with studies on plant biotechnology development with ornamental plants at Chiba University in 2002. During her postdoctoral research, she engaged in functional analysis of genes involved in disease resistance and transformation of cereals at RIKEN, as well as in biochemical analysis of proteins expressed in the sexual organs at NAIST. She has accumulated insights from her study on the double fertilization mechanism of flowering plants, a fundamental and essential phenomenon for cross-breeding. She has especially contributed to the identification of fertilization players that regulate gamete fusion. She is also developing biotechnology utilizing the genes involved in plant sexual reproduction and development.
