I am studying somatic mutations in long-lived trees. Somatic mutations occurring in plants can be transmitted to subsequent generations and provide raw materials for evolution. Recent developments in genomic analysis technologies have enabled identifying genetic variations within an individual tree caused by somatic mutations. By integrating genomics tools and mathematical modelling, I am studying how these mutations occur in stem cells, how mutated cells expand within an individual tree, and how tree developments, including the structure of meristem, affect the pattern of mutation accumulation.
