Jose earned his bachelor's degree in marine biology at the Universidad de Alicante in Spain. He went on to earn his master's degree in plant molecular biology and doctorate in salt stress on plants at the Universidad Miguel Hernandez, also in Spain. After finishing his PhD he focussed on seed dormancy as a postdoctoral researcher at the CSIRO in Canberra, Australia. Currently he leads the Legume Engineering Team, within the Pests and Diseases Group, where he is developing GM cowpea with in-built protection against insects and with enhanced photosynthetic capacity, following on TJ Higgins' research.
