Dominique Van Der Straeten
Dominique Van Der Straeten is a full professor at Ghent University, and research director of the Laboratory of Functional Plant Biology.
She conducted pre-doctoral research at Reading University in UK, and joined prof. H.M. Goodman’s lab with a PhD fellowship from the Research Foundation Flanders to work at Harvard University for her doctoral research, continued at Ghent University with prof. M. Van Montagu. For her PhD thesis on ACC synthases, she was awarded the Soenen Prize for Plant Breeding and nominated Laureate of the Royal Academy of Sciences, Literature and Fine Arts of Belgium. She conducted a brief post-doctoral stay at the University of Utrecht with prof. H. Lambers. Besides working on ethylene biology and remote detection of plant stress, Dominique initiated research on biofortification, driven by the aspiration to contribute more directly to society. She was a visiting professor in Ecuador, Thailand, and Brazil, and published over 270 Web-of-Science indexed papers. In 2022, she was awarded a fellowship from the Francqui Foundation. Dominique is an elected member of the Royal Flemish Academy of Belgium for Science and the Arts and a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
