Since its inception, CRISPR system-based genome editing has created significant excitement in the field of biomedical science, animal biology, industrial biotechnology, and agriculture. Beneficial applications of CRISPR based tools opened-up many avenues to modify genome of living organisms towards development of unique and useful traits. Novel trait development for crops has become easier and faster by the application of CRISPR mediated genome editing which offers not only the faster trait development but also offers unprecedented accuracy for genome engineering. Genome editing improves nutritional value, disease resistance and climate resilience for our crops, also helps in improving breeding by increasing its speed. At CIMMYT we have established genome editing for faster, cheaper, and precise development of traits in maize, wheat and dryland crops that are crucial for Global South. This talk will highlight CIMMYT’s efforts in developing genome edited crops in collaboration with public and private sectors towards achieving food security in the Global South.
